to those familiar with the output of cologne-based imprint firm from back in the early ‘00s, the name of geiger, alias nass, shall undoubtedly ring a bell. herald of an hedonistic melange of funk-soaked electro pop and guitar-riddled synth music, sitting somewhere close to acts like ween and junior boys, alexander geiger is about to break a eight-year hiatus with the drop of his debut album under the newly-founded moniker of fahrland. a release that both encompasses a healthy dose of the discoid tropes from the firm era but also aspires to split with a segment of it, geared towards exploring further undisclosed fringes of his shape-shifting sound universe, ‘mixtape vol.1’ is the fruit of a decisive move from the sleepless berlin to the peaceful countryside landscapes of fahrland – a lushly forested area near potsdam which you’ll have understood played an essential role in geiger’s longed-for return. this limited edition bundle includes the vinyl lp plus mc and download code.

sunlight by herbie hancockis a 1978 jazz-funk, fusion album. it features hancock’s vocals through a vocoder as well as performances by drummer tony williams and bassist jaco pastorius. this was when hancock began heading towards a more mainstream smooth jazz/r&b fusion, similar to fellow jazz-fusion pianist patrice rushen. the album produced a hit-single entitled “i thought it was you”. as a whole the album tends to lay more toward funk than a jazz record, and is reminiscent of much of the electro-funk of the time. this release marks the beginning of the 80s electro-era style that was more refined in herbie’s later albums such as “future shock” and “sound-system”. pressing on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

for quite a while now we are supporting bas van vuurde a.k.a. colophon to the fullest. the harlem based producer is a regular in our store and after some proper vinyl digging we told him that he could always send over some demos. couple of weeks later we got an email and we enjoyed it so much that we had to release it. we asked vc-118a / mohlao, who also put out music on labels such as radio matrix, lunar disco and tabernacle records, for a remix. colophon has it s own label called lowercase life, beautiful hand printed sleeves with stunning music and remixes by florian kupfer and orson wells, produces nighttime tracks for the floor with a deep but spacious melancholic feel. the heritage ep is a hommage to analog machine soul techno, as he calls it himself. deeptrax is presenting future sounds in fresh modern cuts with a stunning electro-ish remix by vc-118a.

molten moods releases another finely curated various artists record with tracks by skee mask, kessel vale, jonas yamer and konrad wehrmeister. kessel vales opening track -voguing geisha- is an unconventional breakbeat masterpiece following his sense of harmony and rhythm already shown through previous releases on tanstaafl records and rhythm nation. as the track unfolds it reveals musical storytelling by integrating a technoid polyrhythmic loop structure into melodic synth figures, slowly deconstructing in the end. skee mask collaborated with molten moods labelhead and carl gari member jonas yamer on -fanta ocean-, it being the first release ever outside of his ilian tape homebase. the outcome is a moody idm piece with cinematic qualities, complex but soothing. the b-side begins with -xenomorph- by konrad wehrmeister, who is known by his releases on public possession and svs records. this trancy yet distorted and detailed electro banger surely takes on the role of the records dancefloor highlight. the closing track -insgeheim- is delivered by molten moods head honcho jonas yamer. here groovy kicks, distorted chords and a psychedelic pad are woven into one compelling 10 am techno track. the common thread of molten moods 4 is four young munich artists going on a joint trip into idiosyncratic electronic music. the resulting tracks intertwine as one modern and diverse techno record. out on 12&#8243,, vinyl and wav by the end of march 2018. in the tradition of molten moods cost-conscious design strategies by paul bernhard, the record comes with a xeroxed low budget sticker set. mastered by manmade.

following hammer s stand out release on loft records last year, canna gets the remix treatment by four killer producers. first up, lauer adds his trademark flavour to the already outstanding title track canna , bending the mind with an acidic top line and classic korg m1 bells.the a2 sees supreems take the techno edge off man ray replacing the drums with a more electro tinged style of rhythm, whilst echoing the synths into the back of the mix to let the drums take the foreground. flip it over and you get two reworkings of manaka . firstly, domenic cappello switches the breaksy flow of the original for a more club ready kick to compliment those stabs, in turn elevating the breakdown to greater effect. in contrast, lord of the isles dives deeper into the breaks feel of hammer s original, adding glitchy samples and oddball synth lines to take this one an even more interplanetary tip.

roza terenzi is the latest convert to the kalahari oyster cult, the australian producer debuts with four tracks showcasing her unique sound. influences come from far and wide, shifting between electro, house, techno and even early rave anthems. the space bleeps of -gigi- are soon interrupted by shouldering kick drums. samples stagger and stumble before key stabs cut through beats in this hazy piece of early morning elation. -mwah- maintains those euphoric moods. snapping snares slice through shimmering synthwork and soaring strings to keep the night grooving. darker tones enter with -rare high-, but these shades are soon brightened by arcing notes. acid lines squeak and squirm in this balancing act of disparate colours and chords. distant lands and exotic encounters are conjured for -soft-, perfumed percussion and meandering melodies mingle and merge for head swimming close of aromatic audio.

part 3 of the soul of the automaton series. this is soulful techno, electro with subtle ambient elements and idm echoes, touching the more experimental side of music here and there. bunnik has not completely severed his links with the past but he is unafraid of the future. this is again emotive, futuristic, concise, dissonant utopian glitch music that s equally as good for the club as it is for the soul. constructed on the west coast of holland in the harbour city of rotterdam.

in those times of newfound experimental conformity, it is sometimes needed to go back to simplicity. this may be where dj oil is leading us to. you think you know what you can expect but common ground is not always in your head, it is sometimes under your feet. this is the second 12inch of the bref avenir collection (to be released digitally later this month), our southern activist using well-known tropes and samples to provide necessary confusion. telephunk is nothing else than a monster breakbeat funk (away from the new lynn collins dictatorship), unfashionably cool if you see what we mean. if paresse is its twin dark sister, locking electro in its black music roots whilst remaining strangely european, then fall is its downer baggy brother.

discos capablanca return with a record from the mysterious detroit-based sharif laffrey (we know little more than his place of birth, and that he likes to ride his bike and warm weather) who brings the heat on the turn it up 12 inch. recorded in detroit in the late 80s and released on a cassette tape compilation in 1988, the original *turn it up* is a long forgotten gem from the period that electro was beginning to morph and mutate into nascent forms of techno. excavated by hugo capablancas label, the track is presented in an edited version that stays true to the original and complemented by an acid dub not dub version that implements plenty of deranged 303 action.

torino label we play the music we love has already made a strong start with some immersive turns by trevor deep jr and rills, and now they provide a platform for italian duo luminer. -indaco- is a charged up dub techno excursion with crisp percussion to propel the classic chord shimmer that course through the centre of the track. -canadian- takes a deeper direction with a crafty tapestry of synth flares and a more understated rhythm section. hiver s reconstruction of -indaco- opts for a crooked electro foundation, nimble acid line and a shapeless swell of pad tones as the key ingredients, and then icelandic techno champ thor whips up a sharp-strutting dub techno variation of -canadian- that sits comfortably with the luminer tracks.

christina vantzou and john also bennett’s musical interpretation of thoughts of a dot as it travels a surface, a 90m panoramic wall drawing by zin taylor, is a beautiful electro-acoustic meditation on the passage of time. it was recorded live at westfälischer kunstverein in münster, germany, may 6th, 2017, and now finds its way onto vinyl via the supremely keen-eared shelter press.

insane disco cut from 1984 repressed! you d be forgiven for not knowing breaking at the party, the sole single release from nyc outfit joey pastrana & his back of tricks. it was originally released in 1984 on the short lived tropic of buddha records, a label dedicated to latino takes on electro and disco. such is the record s obscurity and cult status amongst collectors that you ll struggle to find original copies for sale for less than l500. this city of dreams reissue presents both of the original mixes (vocal and dub style instrumental), both of which fuse elements of boogie, electro and dub disco in a fabulously eccentric and wonderfully funky way. the synthesizer sounds, in particular, are superb.
